4.5 Adorable and somewhat sad birds for The Bird Feeder by Andrew Larsen and Dorothy Leung!

Andrew Larsen and Dorothy Leung's heart-wrenching picture book about illness and loss through they eyes of a child was absolutely stunning. The Bird Feeder is narrated by a nameless child that any reader could see themself in. The child's maternal grandmother, referred to throughout the book as Grandma, comes to stay with her daughter and grandchild when she gets sick, bringing with her a bird feeder.

The narrator's relationship with their grandmother is sweet--they love sitting together, talking with each other, and drawing pictures of birds. As time progresses, Grandma gets sicker and eventually goes into hospice. The writing style and gentle, loving illustrations reflect the child's understanding of the world and their experiences. This incredibly moving story tackles loss in a straightforward, gentle, and authentic manner.

I'd strongly recommend this book for anyone helping a child process the loss of a loved one, but it's also just a really good book that could probably move anyone to tears. Check out The Bird Feeder. I suspect you'll be glad you did.
